A Few Reviews
This band had come a long way from their raw 2-song demo CD I received back in '02. One song, Mierda, is re-recorded here. Back on that release, the band had a sound that reminded me of early 80's death rock scene here in L.A. Super Heroines meets 45 Grave mixed with Rozz Williams/Rikk Agnew period Christian Death. On this new release, these aggressive women from Seattle have honed their chops and recorded in a better studio. The opening track. "No Crime, No Gain", shows their blend of Kittie meets Lush trading metal riffing with some surf chord progressions. Track 4, "Lost in Those Hours," starts off deceivingly happy and bubble gum, but quickly turns ugly with some sludge and ends happy again. What a ride! From beginning to end, these 3 women play lossely around the formula of playing heavy -which is a good thing- but the other elements they bring to the table keep them from being predictable. -Donofthedead (Razorcake issue#24)
It seems like only yesterday when the Northwest scene was flooded with bands like Free Verse: A trio of girls playing unrelenting and slinky rock anthems. Skirting the line between punk rock and hard rock (didnt we used to call the grunge?), this record is both a call to arms and a slap right in the face. I only hope that this little label pushes this band as hard as they seem willing to push their listeners because I could see these ladies going very far, very soon. -Bob Ham (Tablet Dec/04)
On their new Jack Endino Produced CD, Free Verse exploit their singers voice to maximum effect. On track one, No Crime No Gain, she uses her exorcism vocal to shout Eyes closed, lying still, pretending not to feel a thing.
Going between an exasperated industrial howl to a pure melodic tone helps create a unique new metal sound that is Free Verse. Chunky guitars churn over dark tribal drums on Little Apocalypse is a stand out that flows nicely to the moody and dark The Last Fight. I learned things I didn’t want to believe about me – another standout!
I also like Cancerous Expectations. Here the two voiced battle for time while in a Linda Blair-like growl. Free Verses matriarch child creates the taste of cancer in my ears. Another job well done on artwork and packaging by Buttermilk and good instrumental sounds and nice drums produced by the famed Jack Endino make Generator by Free Verse an interesting and strong CD. -Ted Axe (Seattle Sinner, Feb/05)
